Birth of Commercial Radio

October 27, 1920

KDKA Pittsburg, applies for and is granted the very first commercial broadcast radio license in the world. Six days later, on November 2, KDKA transmits the first official broadcast of a US radio station. “This is the Westinghouse Radio Station KDKA, Pittsburgh” came the announcement, and it was official. They then announced the results of the Harding-Cox presidential election. The audience would have been small – only a few people were listening on their primitive crystal sets.
